10 Tips for Government Grant Writing
1. Read all guidelines, program announcements and other supporting documents carefully. Follow all instructions, including page limits, formatting instructions, and deadlines.
2. Pay close attention to grammar, spelling, and punctuation.
3. Write according to the likely level of expertise of your reviewers.
4. When writing your proposal, do not assume the need for your service in the community and or financial need is apparent because of the recession. Spell it out.
5. Make a clear and logical case for why you or your company should do this project at this time.
6. Ask questions if you are unclear on a requirement.
7. Be honest about your funding needs. It is more risky to ask for too little, rather than too much.
8. Collaborate whenever possible.
9. Drum up support for your proposal.
10. The most important thing is to have a project in mind and then search for a grant to fund it.
