Marketing Plan. A carefully constructed marketing plan (increasingly called strategic communications plan) is important for any nonprofit organization so that all aspects of operations are addressed and coordinated. The plan helps to define the organization’s “brand,” which is the personality of an organization. The plan should include the basic marketing techniques that will be used, how market research will be conducted, who has responsibility for which components of the plan, etc.
Note: Advocacy: There are federal and state laws which address how nonprofits can lobby and advocate. Because there have been varying interpretations of some laws, it may be helpful to get legal advice from an attorney experienced in this matter when beginning an advocacy campaign or lobbying for a particular issue. Generally nonprofit organizations are prohibited from lobbying for candidates, but not for issues.
