Position Description
Executive Director
The Executive Director will report to the HSGA Board of Directors. He/She will lead a staff of 20-plus employed staff and over 300 community volunteers and manage an annual operating budget in excess of $1 million.
Profile: The HSGA is seeking a talented and experienced nonprofit executive to lead this established community organization to financial stability and growth that includes a challenging capital campaign for a new home.
The ideal candidate will be a collaborative leader and results-oriented manager who can translate an exciting plan for the future into realistic and achievable fund development strategies for both capital and operating revenue. The ideal candidate will have a proven track record of attracting foundation, corporate and individual contributions, including major gifts.
The ideal candidate with have significant experience managing a nonprofit organization at the senior level or similar skills outside of the sector with a demonstrated knowledge and understanding of the sector. In addition, he/she must have proven success with managing and improving the financial performance of an organization in a competitive marketplace. He/She must have excellent interpersonal skills to inspire and motivate staff, volunteers and board members in accomplishment of the mission. The Executive Director will be a dynamic representative of HSGA to the community, to funders, donors and other constituencies and will be able to create enduring partnerships with them to achieve the mission.
The ideal candidate will be a person of unquestioned integrity who is comfortable in an animal-centered environment and who will promote a team concept among all levels of paid staff and volunteers.
Responsibilities/Duties:
Leadership
- Inspires and nurtures collaboration between the staff, donors, media, municipalities and volunteers.
- Develops strategic goals with input from the Board.
- Establishes and maintains positive relationships with the Board of Directors, the Executive Committee and the Board’s standing committees.
- Communicates with the President of the Board on a regular basis. Apprises the President or Board of necessary changes, problems or needs.
- Demonstrates good judgment skills.
Personnel Management
- Hires, retains and rewards staff
- Ensures that necessary policies and procedures are developed, documented, administered and communicated
- Communicates frequently with employees regarding the current and future plans of HSGA
- Promotes professionalism, effective and efficient communication and demonstrates positive management practices.
Fundraising
- Develops a fundraising plan, with input from the Board
- Communicates the mission of HSGA and develops relations with foundations, organizations, corporations and donors
Identifies, contacts and nurtures viable prospects, increasing the amount of donations and grants
Leads the capital campaign
Operations
- Ensures that the HSGA’s infrastructure effectively and efficiently supports the mission
- Supports the staff in identifying needs for the smooth operation of HSGA and develops strategies with them and the Board to find creative, cost-effective solutions
- Ensures that needed procedures are in place and communicated to staff and volunteers
- Works with the Board to achieve a sound balance between programs and financial resources
- Oversees maintenance and repair of the facility on a timely and reasonable cost basis
Financial Management
- Prepares an annual budget and presents it to the Board
- Effectively monitors financial performance on a timely basis
- Implements and administers sound, reasonable internal controls
- Identifies new sources of revenue and cost reductions
- Ensures adequate insurance coverage for the HSGA
- Ensures financial solvency
The Executive Director will meet these requirements:
- At least 10 years of effective management level nonprofit experience
- Bachelors degree in a related field required / Masters degree in management/administration preferred
- Successful track record in development including securing grants and contributed income from individual and corporate donors
- Proven fiscal management experience
- Demonstrated leadership and administrative skills
- Excellent interpersonal skills including ability to build and motivate teams
- Ability to communicate effectively including verbal, writing and public speaking skills
- Passion for the humane treatment of animals
The Humane Society of Greater Akron (HSGA) is an independent, nonprofit organization dedicated to protecting animal welfare throughout Summit County, Ohio. The mission of the HSGA is to promote the humane treatment of animals. This involves the rescue and rehabilitation of sick, injured, abused and abandoned animals, the investigation of animal cruelty for Summit County; community education; and ultimately animal adoption. As a "no time-limit facility," animals that are healthy and adoptable will live at the shelter for as long as it takes to place them in a loving, caring home.
